The hardships of life can be cruel and unforgiving for the average individual. Sickness, depression, and anger swarm the lives of every human being while some have it better than others. However, the unity of those people can be beneficial for themselves and also the world. Teamwork is a major theme within the book Rash. Bo Marsten, the narrator and protagonist of the book, says that “one thing about being part of a team: … --every little detail becomes important because if one little thing doesn’t happen just right, everything stutters and grinds to a halt” (Hautman 104). He explains that teamwork is important because without it problems can occur. For things to work efficiently the world needs teamwork. In the book Rash, teamwork is essential and beneficial not just for Bo but also the prisoners and the entire USSA.

He does not have many friends and mostly relies on himself most of the time. He is on the track team, a sport that does not involve teamwork, and is usually playing against the rest of his team when he runs a race. He is not familiar with teamwork and it gets him into trouble later in the story. “As for dealing with people, forget about it. … I didn’t have the patience,” said Bo (Hautman 7). Bo puts himself against everyone else and because of that he ends up in prison where he eventually learns about the importance of teamwork.
When Bo is in prison, he learns the value of teamwork and uses it to help better himself mentally and physically. He is assigned a job as a pepperoni shooter on a pizza making team and has to learn how to work with others to complete the job. The process of pizza making is completed faster because of the teamwork involved and each individual on the team is needed or else the process would be delayed greatly.
