For some people, it might become the place an unspeakable act was done to them. College campuses have been now called “The most dangerous place for women in America” and that’s because 1.1 million rapes occur in America and most happen on college campuses. Those numbers are staggering knowing that rape is the most underreported crime in America. Rape affects everyone men, women, children and comes in many forms such as “Acquaintance Rape”, which is rape by a person who is known to the victim. It isn’t the stranger walking down the street anymore, it’s her friend, classmate, boyfriend, or their acquaintances that often commit these crimes now. When you hear things like “boys will be boys”, “she shouldn’t have had that on then”, “well you did flirt with him”, it just fuels this destructive fire. That’s like saying a woman at a coastal pool party wouldn’t have gotten raped if she wasn’t wearing a bikini, see it makes no sense. We should be teaching men that even if she’s your friend, girlfriend you don’t have the right to take advantage of her when she’s drunk or think your obligated to anything. No means No, I don’t want to do this means No, if she is intoxicated means No, fighting back means No, it’s not hard to know that a person doesn’t want to be sexual assaulted. And yes, men get raped to but it’s more likely to occur in their adolescence and their risk decrease as they get older. Although if men are raped at any time in their lives it’s still committed by another man. Which brings me back to the point that boy and men should be taught not to rape, instead of woman and young girls being taught not to get raped. Since I was a teen my parents told my sisters and I to watch our surroundings and to take a defense class in college but I’ve never once heard them tell my brothers not to rape. I’m not saying my parents are bad parents but I just think most parents believe that their son(s) should know better but obviously, most men don’t, which is why it’s a problem now.
