The dilemma that I experienced deals with being caught between a rock and a hard place, pertaining employment performance issues. The situation evolves on Maria, when she had taken a temporary leave from a successful Home Health business, since she took on the responsibility of taking care of her sick, elderly father. After taking care of her elderly father, she had decided to take a break from that to take care of herself and earn money to support herself. Maria had to come back on a full-time basis to make up for the time lost and money that was not obtained. There were cases where she has had to leave early from those meetings as well causing frustration amongst the other employees. Even though her attendance hasn’t been the greatest, she still was able to keep her work updated and done to the best of her ability, but at the same time, she still fell behind here and there. The other employees, on the other hand, are suffering and are complaining since, because of her absences, having to pick up her slack occasionally. The other coworkers are going as far as making comments such as “a woman’s place to be is at home”, constantly mocking her, to bring her down for the reason they had to put in extra work just so she won’t fall …show more content…
First thing was to create a list of pros and cons. Evaluating Maria’s side of the situation, we have the different pros and cons for her. If I, as her manager, decide to keep Maria in the office, she will have the satisfaction of keeping her job and is able to prosper at the end by earning money and at the same time, helping her father out with her healthcare problem. She will be able to obtain happiness since she is not going to be unemployed and is able to keep up her work to earn the money that she really needs, no matter the pressure put on her by the other coworkers who have been picking up her slack. On the downside, if I do decide to fire her, since she has been taking on too much than she can handle, she ends up with the unhappiness and no satisfaction.
