All folk tales are not suitable for children. Many are not originally intended for children. Too many folktales provide a context in which taboo subjects can be discussed; taboo relating to rape exists, known as “Rape Culture.” In chapter five of The Golden Age of Folk & Fairy Tales from the Brothers of Grimm to Andrew Lang edited by Jack Zipes, the title alone, “Dangerous Wolves and Naive Girls” radiates taboo. Various versions of the popular tale of “Little Red Riding Hood” began as oral folktales shared by women and men throughout Europe, the story eventually evolving into a children’s tale. This tale revolves around a young girl, typically associating with wearing a red cape. The naive girl ventures alone through the forest enroute to her grandmother’s house, bringing along with her a variety of baked goods. Along the way she encounters a conniving wolf, whose interactions with Red are suggestive of devious sexual intent. The wolf arrives to Grandmother 's house …show more content…
Among the suggestive characteristics of the tale is the undertone that Red, the victim, could easily prevent the danger she was in by simply not misbehaving. In the beginning of the story, Red’s mother tells her multiple of times to obey her and to not talk to strangers: “walk prettily, and don’t go off the road (Kopf 162). An undertone that is boldly stands out in the beginning of the story. The victim, although seemingly naive, knows exactly what kind of trouble she is getting into from the beginning. Red could have easily not talked to the wolf when he approached her, and she could have easily not told him what she is carrying and where she is going: “[She lives] about a quarter of an hour from here in the forest. Her house is under the three big oak trees. You can tell it by the hazel bushes (Grimm

The first thing that you notice about the wolf is the fact that he is wearing a bonnet in order to attempt a disguise. This shows how the wolf is willing to be as deceptive as possible to get what he wants from Little Red Riding Hood. Also, the fact that he is wearing a bonnet shows that he did in fact use the grandmother to satisfy himself as he had to undress her to be wearing her clothes. The next thing you notice is the fact that the wolf is lacking in disguise as the largest features of him are sticking out. His snout is showing which allows Red to see what a malicious creature he really is.…

Comparing “The Story of the Grandmother” to “The Little Red Riding Hood”, it is clear that Perrault and other authors worked to make the tale more child-friendly and teach lessons. The folklorists in earlier eras did not care about teaching children manners or lessons, and there was not “a wall for sexuality between children and adults” like there is today. (Tatar, “Big Bad Wolf Reconsidered”) Excluding the cannibalism and the systematic striptease from his version, it is evident that Perrault wanted to spare the child’s innocence. The Grimm Brothers went even further by “erasing all traces of the erotic playfulness found in ‘The Story of the Grandmother’”…
