Rape is a brutal, physical action that takes away, from the victim, far more than their innocence and sense of being, but, in addition to, their frame of mind is altered, sometimes obliterated to the extent of insanity, constant anxiety, self-loathing, and fear. When interacting with certain people and crossing certain boundaries without the consent of both parties is a serious problem. What makes sexual violence worse is that most states do not have a clear, set punishment that is reasonable depending on the situation. Sexual assault and rape are two different things that are punished the same which is an issue. Sexual violence is extremely serious and people need to learn the importance of what makes sexual assault and rape what they are and how to punish someone correctly based on the degree of the crime.
Many people do not understand the difference between sexual assault and rape; however it is very important to know the differences when trying to identify an incident of sexual violence. The two topics or sexual assault and rape are very similar, although what makes these topics different, are very specific. Sexual assault is a much broader topic of sexual violence with a broader definition of sexual contact or behavior without consent. Rape, however is defined as simply as sexual interactions with no consent from both parties (Kaiser, Dillon).
