A sestina poem has six stanzas of blank verse that all have six lines and the last few words in the first stanza show up throughout the rest of the stanzas, this poems rhyming scheme goes “abcdef, fedcba, faebdc, cfdabe, ecbfad, deacfb, and bdfeca.” Villanelle is another French style of poetry , before it was became poetry it was usually an old Italian folk song performed with a dance. Villanelle has five tercets and a final quatrain. The villanelle poem usually has a three part structure; introduction, development and conclusion and typically focuses on some type of obsession. A haiku is a Japanese form of poetry designed to be very compact. Haikus can focus on everyday experiences, feelings or even nature, but because haikus have limited space, they must use simple words and grammar. Haikus do not rhyme and are very short the poem has three lines the first and last lines having five syllables and the second line have seven. The length of haikus tend to make the poem more difficult to write because the poet is faced with having to create something memorable in few words. Rap is most associated with and a main ingredient for hip-hop. In 1541, rap was first used as a word meaning to utter sharply or vigorously. Then in 1932 the word was used as a way of acknowledgment and later to converse in an open and by the 1960’s it was used as a slang term referring to an oration or speech. By the 1970’s Rap could be described as talking in a stylistic manner on records. Rap can be traced back to its African roots where centuries ago the griots of West Africa told stories rhythmically and over drums. Rap can also be found in the Blues, which are work songs and spirituals of slavery and influenced greatly by West African musical traditions. It was argued that the blues were being rapped as early as the 1920’s by Elijah Wald and he even went on to call hip hop “the living blues”. The 1970’s is when rap found its way into hip hop music initially as a small part of an overall track, and later as the major part of a track with a small hip hop component. The first common rap track to be released came out in 1979 from the Sugerhill Gang whose track ‘Rappers Delight’ hit #36 on the US pop charts and #2 on the US R&B charts. While it was technically a hip hop song it paved the way for the commercial success of rap as a music style.
