But in the end it settled for capitalism, which energized it and brought it to a position of global dominance (Steve Yates Rap lyrics encourage positive capitalist views). The topic of Rap and its effects has a deep history to consider, and there will always be both supporters and critics who continue to debate this topic. There is data that proves both sides right and wrong. Some people think it promotes sexism or distrust in women, others think that it does nothing and does not affect people.

Experiments play a big role in proving this claim wrong. Advocates state that researchers conducted an experiment where one group listened to rap with lyrics, another group listened to rap music without lyrics, a third just read the lyrics, and the last didn’t read or listen to rap music. (Copley, Jennifer Violent Rap lyrics do not affect listener behavior or attitudes) After the experiment none held more negative attitudes towards women. advocates claim racism might play a role in the controversy. Analysis states people say distasteful things about rap due to subconscious racism. One group was given a violent passage and they were more inclined to say it was offensive if it was from rap rather than a country song. Some people also support that drug and alcohol use starts before listening to rap. The use of drugs and alcohol start when people are young and before they start listening to rap. This indicates that rap does not change behavior, rather it starts when people are young. (Baker and Bor, 2008, Tatum, 1999). "I can't blame a person shooting up a school on music," he says. "It goes deeper than that. Philly is a violent city. It's filled with a lot of poor, uneducated people with no jobs and they think the only way out of the situation is with violence (Johnson Peak Rap music can both encourage and discourage violence). You have to rob people to go get a better car or steal from people to get a better house. Poverty makes you do negative stuff." Says Peak Johnson. Although, it was in a positive manner, the same can occur, but in a negative effect. The problem with the music business is that it is unpredictable. If a genre of music came along with the same amount of support as Hip-hop and promoted violence, the effects can be lethal. For example, NWA’s protest song “F*** tha Police” from the album Straight Outta Compton expressed violence and hate toward the police officers and indicated that they were rapist. There still has been resistance to violence to the society of hip-hop.…

Does Rap Have A Negative Heavy Influence On Our Youth Today? Many people believe that rap music and lyrics are infused with both misogynistic and violence glorifying ideologies. This very mentality is often expressed through displaying what others, along with author Gretchen Cundiff view as prevalent negative aspects that are presented within the popular genre. This principle is heavily expressed throughout the analyzation of Gretchen Cundiff’s article titled “The Influence of Rap and Hip-Hop Music: An Analysis on Audience Perceptions of Misogynistic Lyrics.”…

McWhorter mentioned that in his article Hip Hop Holds Blacks Back by John H. McWhorter, that rap music “teach [es] young [African American] to take thuggish stand” (McWhorter 1). However, I simply disagree with McWhorter because rap music does not advocate young boys to take thuggish stand but aware them about their surroundings. Hip Hop music was not originally targeted for young kids but for the…

In Nathan McCall’s article “My Rap Against Rap” published by Reader's Digest he expresses how rap music is influencing young black people in today's society. Comparing his experiences to the film The Godfather and the effects they had upon him. Noting its violent gangsters and gunfights have created a fascination among young black Americans, it was the ruthless code of principles that govern the gangster’s lives that he ties to the rap lyrics. McCall took things into his own hands and shot the man mafia style like in a scene from the film. While being fingerprinted realizing he was just a scared mixed up kid.…

Dismally, I do have to disagree with such minimal acclamations as there is not enough evidence to conclude that hip hop encourages violence and that the stories and rhymes in rap music are not the primary source to blame. Without further ado, I hereby agree with Tricia Rose’s statement that hip hop does not cause violence. Tricia Rose profoundly outlines the injustices, discriminations, and stereotypes that African Americans experienced. She conveys two main solutions which is includes the following: One solution is to take this matter into consideration and initially express these concerns to black youth and the legitimate violence they face in a form of social change. And the second…

Morrison states, “Marketing messages of hate and violence to children sends the signal that violence is widespread and normal, that it is acceptable to abuse women, and that there is glamour in lawlessness” (Morrison). Teens are listening to music that sends the messages that it is okay for men to beat their wives and girlfriends because they are above the law. This has had an extremely negative effect in the black community. As stated by McWhorter, “Rap music is harmful to the black community because it links to racism, violence, and misogyny ” (McWhorter). In “Rap Music and Rap Audiences,” it states that “many scholars note that some rap lyrics attempt to objectify, devalue, or subjugate African American women through insults and name calling” (Dixon).…

In regard, rap artists are sending out a negative message to youth. Among the many youth and negative lyrics in rap music, rap artists remain an influence on youth education. Many youth are starting to come up without a decent education, because youth are dropping out of school to pursue a rap careers (Toms, 2006, p2). There has been controversy surrounding rap music has been in the forefront of the American media. From the hype of the East Coast-West Coast rivalry that shadowed the murders of rappers Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. to the demonization of modem music in the wake of your modern day crime it seems that political and media groups have been quick to place blame on rap for a seeming trend in this so called “youth violence”. however, though critics are quick to point out the violent lyrics of some rappers, they are missing the point of rap's message. Rap, like other forms of music, cannot be understood unless it is studied without the frame of its historical and social context. Today's rap music reflects its origin in the hip-hop culture of…

Rap in general is a very strong lyric form of music. There are so many different forms of rappers and song lyrics, but I do think that they can all make a form of social change. Some raps can be very educational and give you a form of knowledge that you did not expect to receive. They can impact your way of thinking and the way you see things. There are other raps that can do the exact opposite, so weather it is for a good or bad change, I do feel that it does cause a change.…

Gangster Music also offered to what many were expecting that being the lyrics pertaining to drugs, sex and weapons. It gave many an escape from the true reality which many were accustomed too. It also offered a negative image for African Americans as they were the prime consumers for this type of music, no positive message was being spread from this music to influence otherwise. If a study were to be done regarding the influence rap music has on the listeners I think it has a direct effect. If you see entertainers and rappers promoting violence drugs and sex it might be deemed as acceptable for others to perform the same actions without the consequences.…
