Rangers Rivalry

It is a rivalry that’s was established in 1971, that is still going strong today.
The first ever meeting at the Nassau Coliseum between the New York Islanders and the New York Rangers took place on September 27, 1972, with the Rangers winning 6-4.
However, throughout the late 70’s and all of the 80’s this rivalry was controlled by the Islanders. Winning the Stanley Cup in 1980, 81, 82, and 83.
Nonetheless, the tides changed during the 1994 season.
The two team met up in the first round of the playoffs, where we saw the Rangers sweep the Islanders to move on.
As far as playoffs go for both team, the Islanders have not won a series since ’93, and for the Rangers they have found themselves in the Eastern conference finals the last 3 of 4 years.

For now, the rivalry is heating up again, while both teams are top contenders in the Eastern Conference.
For the Islanders, this was their last season at the Nassau Coliseum. For Islanders fans, it was a season to remember. The Islanders looked to be a dominate team in the NHL (47-28-7) for the first time in a long time.
Not only did the dominate play over most NHL teams, they were able to take control of the series vs the Rangers. Winning the season series (3-2), and giving their fans some bragging rights.
However, for Ranger fans, they gave their fans something to brag about. They won the last 2 games at the Coliseum. The last game took place on March 10, 2015, where the Rangers won 2-1.
Not only did the Rangers win the first game of the rivalry at The Barn, they also won the last game at the barn.
The first game between these two teams in the 2015-2016 season will be on December 2, 2015. It will be the first game the two teams play against each other at the Islanders new home, the Barclays
