Army Ranger School History
Over time, the military has grown to be more diverse and equality friendly. Through these times women have held the spotlight for their ability to keep up in a ‘male dominated field’. Two women in particular, Kristen Griest and Shaye Haver have paved a whole new direction for this era.
Haver and Griest worked their way through high school, to West Point, a prestige Military Academy. Haver ran cross country and received a scholarship in ROTC. Griest was also a runner but for West Point. Later, they both would have no idea the history they would make in today’s military, shaping a new way for women.

Then she was highly encouraged by her commander to try the course. As for Haver, she had thought about ranger school for a while. Others who were in her unit who left for ranger school only pursued her interest.
Haver stated, “It’s definitely awesome to be part of the history of ranger school.” Later she spoke on future women entering the course. She added, “I hope others come with strength of mind, just like everyone else had to do to make it to tomorrow. I think if females continue to come to this course they can be encouraged by what we have done, but hopefully they are also encouraged by the tradition that the ranger school has left. It was enough to get us to come” (DailyMail).
Each of the 62 days the two soldiers trained in the ranger course is another day added towards history for ranger school. Griest’s and Haver’s dedication, physical, and mental ability led them to be the first ever female rangers, graduating with 96 other soldiers.
