Randy Taylor Interview Essay

The interview with Mr. Randy Taylor, a Ph. D student in the Social, Cognitive, and Neuroscience area as well as Intro to Psychology professor, was interesting because he is a relatively newer professor and somewhat closer to his students as compared to other professors. His interview involved questions about his interest in psychology, as well as the path he intends to take as a professor, as well as the struggles that he will face. Equally importantly, I asked him regarding the struggles with working in a research environment, which is an environment that I hope to some day work in.

He also retold his experience of struggling to manage research as well as teaching and other responsibilities, and he recalled that it took him some semesters to adapt to the new environment. Secondly, he explained the obstacles he faced as an instructor; he began by retelling the experience he had when he was assigned the class he is currently teaching, and how the administrators only told him “basically you have this class at these days and these times” and everything else was left up to the instructor. He reflected on the amount of trial and error and testing that is involved with using different teaching methods and activities. He also reflected on the amount of people you must rely on especially if it’s your first teaching

I interviewed Timothy Beatty who is the dad of my friend Jonathan. I chose him because he works in software engineering, but majored in marine biology while minoring in chemistry and computer science engineering. This intrigued me because in high school I took an oceanography class and fell in love with the study, I wanted to major in oceanography and minor in marine biology, but I figured engineering would be more economic. I still love engineering, so it is not something I’m doing just for the jobs or money. In fact, I am considering a minor in computer science engineering since programming is so fun.…

“Who can say where the road goes, where the day flows, only time.” So begins Enya’s most recognized song, and so, in a way, begins the epic story of Mr. Kaufmann, a High School Forestry teacher who was a carpenter before that, and a student before that. When I first met Kaufmann, I was immediately struck by his eccentrism and clear passion for his job. He is unheeding of barriers, very loud, and tells many stories.…

Aiza Nageeb A Fish Story Not everything in life is crystal clear; sometimes we need to dig deeper to find the true meaning behind a particular idea/thing. In the case study, "A Fish Story" a college professor is trying to teach his students a lesson by making them observe a small fish on a white plate. For three days in a row, the professor assigns the students the same assignment and as the days progress, the students find new results. The first day the students notice basic physical characteristics about the fish, like its size and the color of the plate it rests on. The second day the students use a book to find out about the type of fish it is, and the third day they dig deeper and observe minuscule details; like its weight, position of the mouth and texture.…

In writing classes the most common first day question is whether or not spelling and grammar will count. Most commonly students focus more on how they are writing and if it is grammatically correct or not rather than writing their inner thoughts. Jack Connor in his essay, “Will Spelling Count?”, argues that writing requires meticulous efforts through his use of cause and effect, comparison and contrast, and division and classification. Connor displays cause and effect throughout his essay to show how different ways of teaching affect students performance and effort level. When Connor first began teaching he wanted to be a different type of teacher.…
