Opposed to the world in Anthem, people in today’s world are entitled to their own opinions. Many citizens of today’s world form opinions about leaders and are able to criticize them if he/she feels the leaders are irrational and they do not have to fear persecution. Because they have no ability to think freely, citizens of Anthem are lifeless. The citizens in Anthem are constantly afraid and no one is truly satisfied with their life. People also seek meaningful friendships. This has always been a normal thing, but in Rand’s new world this is considered a Transgression of Preference. In Anthem it is a sin to to prefer things over others because, in concept, all things are equal. In Anthem the Council of Scholars dubs the past as “The Unmentionable Times.” Citizens are forbidden to have any knowledge of history and all remnants of the past have been destroyed during the time period marked as “The Great Rebirth.” The Council is again distorting the past to make it seem as if the change to a collective, communist government is actually beneficial to mankind. In today’s world, we make sure we educate all generations thoroughly about history. Ensuring an in-depth knowledge about the past helps promote change and allows us to not repeat any mistakes humanity might have
