Under age students who use drugs, are taking the chance of not allowing their brains to fully develop. “Many images clearly show that pleasurable sensations produced by some drugs are due to actual physical changes in the brain. Due to the developing nature of the adolescent brain, it is particularly susceptible to these sensations and changes. Many of these changes are long lasting, and some are irreversible. Introducing chemical changes in the brain through the use of illegal drugs can therefore have far more serious adverse effects on adolescents than adults” (Nelson 1). Students who use drugs are more likely to drop out than students who do not use drugs. Groups of students will be more likely to skip their classes so that they can use drugs instead. Students who drop out from school are also more likely to commit crimes. “Students who use drugs or alcohol are statistically more likely to drop out of school than their peers who do not (ONDCP, 2002). Dropouts, in turn, are more likely to be unemployed, to depend on the welfare system, and to commit crimes” (Nelson 1). Randomly testing for drugs should also boost students’ …show more content…
Randomly testing students for drugs is the best way to stop students from using drugs. Randomly testing students will allow the students who do abuse drugs to get help from teachers and counselors. If schools think that the drug tests will cost them too much money they can talk with laboratories that are near them and see if the laboratory will help them with the cost sense the project will benefit the community. By testing student athletes, the testing should make any students using drugs quit if they are serious about playing sports. The same should follow for student in other extracurricular activities. When adolescents abuse drugs and other substances, their brains can be harmed and permanently damaged. Students who use drugs are more at risk to be diagnosed with a mental health problem. If students can be stopped from using drugs they will perform better in school. If students are stopped from using drugs and can get help from adults, they will have the potential to live a healthier lifestyle and are more likely to make better choices. Students will be more likely to receive better and greater opportunities in their lifetimes. By doing this, they will be able to give their families a better life and keep them away from drugs and other harmful substances. If students can be stopped from using drugs soon enough, they will not become fully dependent of drugs and they can be stopped from thinking that they need to use drugs
