The worst industrial accident in history happened in 2013 when the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh collapsed, killing over 1000 people, the majority of them garment factory workers. The global apparel industry is notorious for its terrible working conditions. Most of the research on the causes of events like Rana Plaza focuses on either the factory supervisors’ disregard for the well-being of their mostly female workforce or the immense pressure that multinational companies, such as Walmart, put on factories, which forces the owners to neglect safety as to meet their buyers’ demands and maintain business. While these arguments have merit, they all neglect a significant trade event that could also explain poor working conditions. Describe a time in your life when you balanced competing demands and followed through on a challenging project. (1500 characters max) My biggest extracurricular activity at Tufts is costume designing for student theatre shows. While this may seem frivolous, like simply finding the right shirt to put on an actor, it is actually one of the most demanding parts of my life. On top of the creativity of designing the look for each individual character in a show, I am also responsible for collaborating with other artists, assembling all of the costumes on a strict deadline and fairly limited budget, and staying on top of my academics. Last spring, I designed the costumes for the musical, Into the Woods. It was the first time I had ever designed an entire show by myself
