I will be the type of provider that takes care of my patient’s physical and social needs by recognizing their social and psychology needs and make the appropriate referrals. Additionally, in order to further contribute to the mission of the program I want to advocate for future healthcare providers to practice in impoverished communities. Studies have shown that a majority of health care professionals currently in school may not have been exposed to community health or have had negative experiences. Through volunteer programs I want to educate future health providers about underserved populations that will hopefully result in future providers choosing to work in an underserved area during their career. The purpose of this program to support the mission to improve health and achieve health equity through access to quality services, a skilled health workforce, and innovative programs.…

I have observed the various ways physicians interact with their patients and staff in the times that I’ve volunteered and shadowed Dr. Layth. Discovering that personal interactions with patients are crucial, I found that the primary focus as a caregiver was to provide not only physical, but also, mental, emotional, and at times, spiritual support. With these qualities, I am determined to contribute towards the growth of my colleagues and AZCOM as a whole. I will bring forth a deep desire to learn, an enduring will, and a humble, team-oriented attitude towards my colleagues. Furthermore, I have successfully balanced academics with my position as a shift manager at a local restaurant in the Phoenix area.…

    1) Briefly describe your exposure to medicine As the daughter of a pediatrician, the medical field has surrounded me my entire life. However, my familiarity with the details of medicine expanded at age 15 when I began to volunteer at the C.A.R.E. Clinic, which provides medical care for the uninsured. My internship at a medical examiner’s office exposed me to the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the medical causes of death. In college, I explored medicine by volunteering in the emergency department at Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota in St. Paul and participated in a Global Medical Brigades trip to rural Honduras.…

Attending a school that emphasizes diversity like the University of California, Los Angeles allowed me to interact with dissimilar people and immerse myself in many cultures different from my own. Through conversations outside of class and attending multiple culture nights, I was able to experience some of the customs, values, and beliefs of other cultures I had never been previously exposed to. However, most of my understanding has come from my service in Dr. Amy Waterman’s lab at the UCLA Transplant Research and Education Center. The research lab aims to reduce racial disparities in transplant. An example of our discoveries during research was results showing that minorities, especially African Americans, are less likely to pursue living…

The field is always growing and changing and I yearn to undertake in this lifetime of learning. I find it so exciting that one day I can serve people by improving their health and do so using cutting-edge technologies, some which may have yet to be invented. I may not be able to change the world on the whole, but small actions can have a big influence. I look forward to creating a positive impact on a personal level, treating holistically and compassionately, as this is a career path that calls for an understanding of the human experience as much as it does an understanding of the human body. It is this interplay of science and service that makes medicine so unique, so compelling, and so fit a profession for me to…
