Rama is to be sent to live in the forest for fourteen years upon the request of his father Dasaratha. Dasaratha is following his word and granting his wife two wishes he owned her. The wishes were to banish Rama and to make her son Bharata king instead of Rama. Dasaratha follows his word.Consequently, Rama just follows his father's orders as he knows he has to obey his father wishes. He goes into the forest with his wife Sita and his younger brother Lakshmana who both argued to accompany Rama. It might seem a bit strange for a father to just send away his son to the forest, or for said son to follow so blindly, well that is because they both are fulfilling their dharma. People from this class tend to be excellent rulers and generals, loved by the people, as Rama is. See, Rama was supposed to be the next king of Ayodhya as he was the first son of Dasaratha the current king, but one of his wife, Kaikeyi, asked two wishes of him. The first being to give Ayodhya to Bharata, her son and the second was to banish Rama to the forest. It would be painful for a father to do this to his own son, to deprive him of his rightful position and to banish him for 14 years, as it was for Dasaratha. he was hurt to having to do this, but why must he? As the high king who claims that he could do anything, “I (Dasaratha)can do anything”(Buck 69). Well because he had promised to grant her any two wishes for saving his life and it is his responsibility as king to follow his word in order to fulfill his dharma. We begin to see how dharma plays such a big role in the decisions people make, as far as to compel a father to banish his son. Even though Dasaratha and the people of Ayodhya wish to see Rama become king as he more suitable for the position, Rama must still be banished as his father has to follow his word, which sadly breaks Dasaratha heart and leads to his death. Even after his father's death, Rama refused to return to Ayodhya before the completion of the fourteen years per the request of his father.
