Ralph's Leadership In Lord Of The Flies

There are certain qualities needed to be a virtuous leader. William Golding’s Lord of The Flies, which describes a leader named Ralph, a stranded boy, who lead a group of other stranded boys on the island due to a plane crash. The boys selected Ralph as their leader, by a raise of hands over his opponent, Jack Merridew. Ralph was the superior leader choice, over Jack, because of his better thinking, ability to prioritize, and selfless personality. Clearly, Ralph possesses a sturdy ability to think well and decide on stable ideas for the future. Leaders, like Ralph, know how to look at everyone’s best interest when they lead, “They understand that in certain situations, difficult and timely decisions must be made in the best interests of the entire organization...” (Decisiveness #2, Peter Economy) Ralph can also foresee how intelligent Piggy is. Ralph focuses on the imperative situations on the island, such as being rescued, his rival, Jack, generally focuses on what he wants and says he ‘needs’ such as meat. “‘We want to be rescued, and of course, we shall be rescued,’ voices babbled. The simple statement, unbacked by any proof but the weight of Ralph’s new authority, brought light and happiness.” (William Golding, 37). Ralph is using his head to think ahead and create a plan on how to achieve being rescued. He, unlike Jack, puts his focus on safety for the rest of the boys on returning home
