Leadership is a hard skill set to use and enhance. In the novel Lord of the Flies, Ralph is a natural leader, and he possess some great attributes for typical leaders. He uses his intelligence, strong work ethic, and loyalty to his people to lead the others. We see these simple attributes in most people, but what really sets him apart is his knowledge of what to do. We are not told about his life before the plane crashed, but his lack of experience is evident in the beginning of the novel. Being a kid, he wouldn't know much about survival or leading others, but he certainly shows he is capable of learning and leading.

Just as he has these great ideas, he has the means to start them and work on them. It shows him constantly working on something to help the group. We would always see him doing anything he can to make the group as healthy and safe as possible. He starts working on the huts for the little ones in his time, and gets frustrated with the lack of help, but even without the help he continues to work on them. This shows us how great his work ethic is compared to the others. Jack is an example of a character who doesn't have as good of a work ethic, one who does what he wants and follows a different path. The only thing he wanted to do was hunt the pigs, and he made it a point to only do that. He didn't care about any necessities unless it had to do with the pigs. He helped the younger children when he had the chance, and tried to keep them from being fearful of the imaginary monster they think they see. His loyalty to the people he leads keeps him a leader even after the group splits. The revolution could have been just a simple isolation leading to the banishment of Ralph, but Ralph's faithfulness to the projects and his people kept him in their hearts.
