Ralph's Leadership In Lord Of The Flies Research Paper

Ralph, is he really a leader or just a follower? In the motion picture, Lord of the Flies directed by Harry Hook and originally written by William Golding, a group of adolescent boys are left stranded on an island after crashing by plane, and they have a choice to look for an escape or they can live in the moment and survive off of the island’s offerings. A boy named Ralph was for fleeing and stepped up into power at the initial meeting of the boys. Though, this power was quickly taken from him although he had good motives, he simply could not stand on his own and control the masses, contributing to deaths that could have been prevented. The unfortunate airplane crash that left the group of boys stranded on this foreign island left the boys with many decisions to make, and Ralph was the one to volunteer his efforts in governing the population. Through a community vote Ralph was given role as governor, and with this role the young boy planned to get everyone back safe to their homes and promoted and unified community. If Ralph stuck up for himself and was more of a leader and less of a follower, the children would have been keener to be under his leadership and not Jack’s. The democratic leader set bad examples from the start. Turning his back on and making fun of Piggy, the first boy Ralph had met on the island at the initial assembly. Perhaps, by doing this he wanted to seem more personable and relatable. Instead he ruined his chances of being a reliable democratic leader by going against a very key ideal, that everyone is equal and should be treated as such.
