Another concept by Golding is shown through the use of characterization to uncover Ralph’s covert personality. An indirect use of characterization would be when he wrote “Ralph stood among the ashes of the signal fire, his hand full of meat, saying nothing.” (Golding 74) This indicates Ralph’s reticence to take action and his hesitance to disclose his thoughts concerning the current conditions on the islands. Ralph is obviously bothered by the smoke that went out because of Jack, nevertheless, he suppressed his thoughts and bottled up his emotions.
