Ralph Waldo Emerson: What Do People Learn About Oneself?

Ralph Waldo Emerson, a famous transcendentalist author, once said, "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow." Most people follow society's rules and never go beyond these rules, living a safe and normal life. I agree with Emerson because people only live one lifetime, people can learn about themselves, and learn about there surroundings. There is only one lifetime a single person can live, why not do all the things you are capable of in it. My parents used to tell me that I should never be afraid of trying new things, because you only live once. I have been following this piece of advice ever since. Toward the end of the race I was gassed and almost quit, but I thought to myself, it is only me against the obstacles and did not give up until finally finishing the race by myself. That day I learned I am a persistent and hard worker. I know that trying new things will teach you about your environment, especially if you try it outdoors. Your environment is where you and the people around you learn new things about the world. I love going to the countryside and have always wanted to ride a horse there. Over winter break, my friend asked if I wanted to go to his farm with him, and I said yes. I asked if we could go horseback riding, and we got ready. It was so much different than riding a horse in the city. I felt like they felt so free in the country, but so restricted in the city, like they are being told exactly what to do. It is true that there is a big risk of getting hurt or causing damage to others when people try new things, but how will you know if do not try. Trying new things are very important in life, because you only get one chance to live, you learn new things about yourself and about your surroundings, which allow you to grow.
