Ralph, a fair boy, plays an important role in Lord of the Flies. He is a British, brave, independent and has an athletic appearance. Since the beginning of the novel, he gathered all the boys from the plane crash using a conch which he and Piggy, another survivor, found at the lagoon near the scar. Subsequently, the boys elect him as the leader considering his attractive appearance and the conch which he possesses since the conch symbolizes power because it summons people together. In fact, Ralph shows that he is a responsible chief when while most of other boys are playing, having fun and avoiding work, instead Ralph consecutively mentions about building shelters and concerns about being rescued.
