Ralph And Jack's Leadership In Lord Of The Flies

The definition of a leader is a person who leads, commands, and organizes a group. In the book Lord Of The Flies Ralph, and Jack both think they have what it takes be the leader. Ralph is 12 years old, tall, blond, and the protagonist of the story. Jack represents evil and violence, the dark side of human nature. When you're trapped on an island with multiple different people you need a person who can be kind, courteous, and most of all take charge. Ralph has all the qualities a good leader should have he is kind, caring, smart, generous, and gets work done. Jack on the other hand has very few of these and results in lashing out when something doesn't go how it was planned. Ralph shows he has a better understanding of the littluns who are younger children on the island ranging in age 6 and younger. Ralph can see that the littluns are afraid and need shelter and to be cared for. Jack fails to realize that the boys need security, stability, and order to survive on the island. Under Jack's rule, the boys become uncivilized savages. They have no discipline. Ralph, however, keeps the boys under order through the meetings which he holds. At these meetings a sense of order is instilled because the boys have to wait until they hold the conch to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking." He also encourages the boys to build huts. He is very much a true human because although he tries to maintain order, he is often tempted by the indulgences of the other boys. He occasionally makes foolish mistakes, such as joining in with the other boys and killing Simon. When Jack forms a separate, rival group focus in on hunting and savagery rather than rescue, Ralph fights against the superstition and the terror of the other boys. When the numbers in his party begin to diminish, Ralph is left to survive on his own in the forest being chased by the transformed savage
