Many people have different opinions on what makes a good leader. Ralph and Jack, are competing in Lord of the Flies by William Golding, to be the leader of their group. A group of boys are stranded on an island after their plane crashed. There are no adults on the island. The boys vote on a leader, who end up being Ralph, much to Jack displeasure. As the days go on, Jack and Ralph start to fight more. Ralph is focusing on being rescued while Jack is focused on hunting. This leads to Jack leaving the group and taking almost all the older kids with him. Ralph was a better leader for the boys while they were on the island. Ralph did not like the thought of people dying, and he did not intentionally kill people, unless they tried to kill him.

Piggy is the intelligent one on the island and is always trying to help Ralph by giving him good ideas, like building shelters and lighting the fire. Jack on multiple occasions ignores him a\or tells him to shut up, “He took a step, and able at last to hit someone, stuck his fist into Piggy’s stomach. Piggy sat down with a grunt. Jack stood over him” (Golding 71). He acts like a child and projects his frustration onto Piggy who is a valuable resource and without him they could have possibly died. Jack says on multiple occasions that Piggy is useless and that they should get rid of him while Ralph said that they needed him. Jack is extremely impulsive when it comes to Piggy. He does not listen to Piggy’s voice of reason. Robert Coles, a child psychologist at Harvard University is utterly confused on what to do with children who lack rationality, “ What do you do with children who may have arrived at the age of reason but who's psychological life is such that neither rationality nor moral reason operate in their behavior?” (Qtd. in Sachs). Adults are confused on how to deal with people like Jack. Jack lacks rationality while Ralph does not. Piggy trusted Ralph to keep him safe from Jack indicating that Jack was dangerous and could have potentially killed the island’s most valuable resource.
