The scene starts off with a medium shot of Leigh Anne and her three friends at a circular lunch table with a bright, yellow tablecloth. In the background, are more tables with couples eating, waiters, waitresses, and other guests occupying the background and sides of the frame. Moreover, all the people in the background and sides of the frame are extras to make it seem like the restaurant is busy at the middle of the day (lunch). At the beginning of the scene, her friends are making corny jokes while Leigh Anne tilts her head and eyes to the side at the same time to show she has no idea what is so funny, and she doesn't really care to know in a medium shot of Leigh Anne. Beth says, "Does Michael get the family discount at Taco bell cause …show more content…
A quick cut displays Elaine's wide, pretty smile fading to a straight expression with no smile and confusion colors her face and in her eyes. Another cut shows Beth with her eyes wide open and a disgusted expression displayed on her lips. Leigh Anne's serious comment about adopting Michael shocked her friends from laughing into horrified expressions. A cut shows a full-shot of the table with all of her friends' backs to the camera, and the only one facing the camera is Leigh Anne showing the spotlight is hers. Sherry breaks the silence in a close-up shot she brings her hand down on the table and says in a soft, concerned voice, "Leigh Anne is this some sort of white guilt thing." As Sherry says this line with a question burning in her tone and pity in her voice, her facial expression shows confusion and she moves her shoulders up which asks Leigh Anne why she’s doing this. The subtext behind what Sherry said is Leigh Anne did not have to take Michael in, feed him, protect him, or make him a member of her family, but this was only an act of kindness and it was temporarily. However, Leigh Anne's acting with her icy, cruel tone shows Michael is already her son in her …show more content…
Leigh Anne looks like she is thinking for the words to say, "Um before or after he turns over in his grave" in a sassy, purposeful voice to defend herself and her family including Michael. As Leigh Anne says this, she arches her eyebrows and sits up higher to show off to her friends. Leigh Anne continues, "Daddy has been gone five years Elaine" in a close-up of Leigh Anne then of Beth. Beth is in a close-up as she lowers her eyes and looks down to express she feels ashamed and bad for Leigh Anne because she has to defend herself for what she is doing for Michael all by herself. Leigh Anne says, “To make matters worse you were at the funeral remember you wore Chanel and that awful black hat” to Elaine. Leigh Anne puts emphasis on the word “awful” to not only reveal how awful looking the black hat was on Elaine, but to show Elaine how awful of a friend she is for accusing her of taking care of Michael for reasons of race not out of kindness and love. As Leigh Anne criticizes Elaine and defends herself in a commanding, rude tone and voice, cuts of Elaine show up on the screen with her confounded expression then a straight face as she takes the comments flung back at

In Alfred Hitchcock’s film, Rear Window, he uses elements of film in a way that expresses to the audience what the character desires and the power relations that exist between them. In the sequence where Lisa and L.B. Jeffries have dinner from “21 Club,” their contradicting desires are expressed through these various elements. For example, Hitchcock uses framing, editing, and character positioning within the mise-en-scene to portray that Lisa desires Jeff but he doesn’t feel as strongly of her. Furthermore, these elements help the audience to analyze the film for larger significance and to see that during the Classical Hollywood Cinema era, women are often sexualized in their roles and are subjected to or become objects for the male characters…

    1) This mid shot of the Bishops and Captain Sharp standing around a box of letters exchanged by Sam and Suzy is symbolic of the Bishops dysfunctional and broken relationship and the secret affair between Mrs Bishop and the island policeman, Captain Sharp. The symmetrical positioning of the characters around the box gives the shot a flat, storybook-like feeling which is seen in many of Wes Anderson’s films. The complicated relationships between these three characters are of secondary importance and are a stark contrast to Sam and Suzy’s fairytale relationship. This contrast of relationships allows the audience to understand that many relationships experience problems, although some are not as obvious to the outside eye. Through the use of mise-en-scene,…
