The meaning of this image is the biblical story of the raising of Lazarus. Lazarus had been dead and burried for four days when Jesus arrived in Bethany. He stood before the tomb with Lazarus's two sisters, Martha and Mary, as well as others who came to mourn. He asked for the stone cover to be removed, as we can see being done in the image by the man who is hugging the cover next to the tomb. Jesus then called out "Lazarus, come out!" and he stepped out of the grave wrapped in linens, alive once more. The artwork seems to be in the moment that Jesus is performing the mirical and calling out to Lazarus with His hand outstretched. Lazarus is also wrapped in linens and within the tomb.
