Raising Minimum Wage

In terms of the issue of minimum wage, I, Lisa Murkowski believe that the minimum wage should not increase. Therefore, I am not in favor of The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2015 (H.R. 2015/ S. 2015), which will increase the minimum wage to $10.10. However, in cases where the federal minimum wage does not increase a lot, I am in favor of it. On the other hand, in terms of the issue of guns, I am opposed to The Secure Communities Act of 2015 (H.R. 1547/ S. 1547).
What this law will do is require criminal background checks for all online gun purchases and for all firearm purchases at gun shows. It will not require background checks for gun purchases or gun transfers between family members or neighbors. It will also prohibit the sale or possession

Raising minimum wage can be an issue where it would lead to unemployment. In the reading, Increasing the Minimum Wage: Pros & Cons, by Sarah Shemkus, it states, “A higher minimum wage, they claim, would be too heavy a burden on employers, especially small business owners. And those employers, in turn, would be unable to hire as many people -- an undesirable result when unemployment continues to hover at about 8 percent.” In other words, if minimum wage were to increase, many business owners would end up not being able to hire as many people and to ensure that everyone is employed, minimum wage in my opinion should not increase. I am also opposed to raising the minimum wage because this would mean that prices would increase. In the article, Winners and Losers of Federal and State Minimum Wages, it states, “Their research shows that while 1 in 4 of the poorest workers gain from an increase in the minimum wage, 3 in 4 of the poorest workers lose from shouldering the costs of higher prices resulting from the wage increase.” Since many business owners rely on the money that they make to pay their employees, increasing the minimum wage would mean that the product we buy would be much more (supply and demand). With products that we need being much more expensive, this does not help low income families financially. It would in fact put them right back to the situation that they were already at without the increase of minimum …show more content…
I voted against the Background Checks for all Firearm Purchases because I believe that people should be able to buy guns in stores and online without being subjected to a background check. I once stated, “Alaskans living off the road system, in rural villages without gun stores, who order guns over the Internet. To pick up the gun, they would have to buy a ticket to the nearest town with a gun dealer. Whoever you're purchasing from the Internet has to send the gun directly to the dealer ... it doesn't come to you, it goes to whoever is doing your background check." To put it in another way, instead of getting the gun shipped to your house when you order it online, you will have to go through a whole process of doing a background check from the dealer. After that is done, you will have the gun handed to you. However, what I am trying to say about this process of a background check is that it can be very inconvenient for Alaskans who might need a gun for hunting. Our citizens would also be negatively affected by the passage of this bill. There aren’t gun stores everywhere in which people can purchase guns and as a result, people should be able to purchase guns online without background checks. I also voted against the bills Limits Firearm Magazine Capacity and Establishes Regulations for Assault Weapons because according to the Department of Justice, there was no evidence proving that limiting firearm magazine capacity

Imagine all the guns being taken away by the government, more than seventy percent being deny their right to purchase a gun, eventually to all gun sales being made illegal in the United States. Something hard to believe and probably impossible to happen in the United States as the citizens of America strongly supports The Second Amendment of the United States; which states the right to bear Arms, meaning any American citizen has the right to buy a weapon. The people of the United States hold this Amendment very high, and there are associations that supports this right such as the National Rifle Association, which is a nonprofit organization that support gun rights. The gun control idea of a universal background check would make the process of purchasing a gun more difficult, by…

A person working at minimum wage would have no choice but to rely on government assistance such as food stamps or welfare to get by and make ends meet in life. Their income alone would not be enough for all the necessary things we need to survive, such as food, utilities, healthcare and the whole nine yards. Increasing the minimum wage could cut back on taxpayers billions of dollars because low wage workers would be making an increase in salary and would not need assistance, therefore taxpayers dollars would not go towards their needs. Minimum wage is the lowest wage paid to a worker according to the law. Minimum wage in my opinion should be increased. As a matter of fact, a living wage should be put in place instead, because it is the minimum income…

Raising the minimum wage would hurt the economy more than help it. State hourly minimums range from $7.50 in Arkansas to $9.47 in Washington state (Desilver) These states function well without the minimum wage at ten dollars an hour. Raising the minimum wage would increase prices of everyday living items. This would just erase the effects of the raise. The wage has been raised five times in the last four decades (Desilver). The economy has not worsened or heightened because of these raises. This is proof that a wage that stays consistent still works in the economy…

The minimum wage in the US is well below that of other advanced countries. The economist estimates that the minimum wage should be about twelve dollars an hour in the US based on our GDP. A higher minimum wage not only increases worker’s income, which is sorely needed to high demand and get the economy going. “Raising the minimum wage to $10.10 would create economic prosperity and put more money into the pockets of hard-working Americans” (“Reasons Raise minimum wage chart”). Raising the minimum wage to ten or more will help the workers to turn around and spend that money, which is a huge boost for the economy. Raising wages would help people get off of food stamps, and ultimate benefits. For this reason, government save money and create economic security. We would all love a raise. People need to be raising the minimum wage. Unfortunately, the issue is not simple. It turns out that increasing the minimum wage means decreasing job opportunities. If the minimum wage increased, people will face lots of problem such as- it would result in the job loss evidence of job losses, hurt low-skilled workers, little effect on reducing poverty, and it may result in the higher price for consumers. Most Americans agree the current federal minimum wage is not enough to live on. It is hard to imagine some families are surviving on just $15,000 a year.…

Despite Kristof’s credible argument, his ideas are inaccurate because the regulations that presently exist are sufficient and controlled, while still allowing guns to remain convenient. Additional gun laws are not needed because there are enough regulations to provide adequate protection for the public. The existing gun regulations are reasonable due to the background checks that are required when purchasing a gun. Current gun laws outline the requirements of…

Second, when we raise wages and the amount of money companies are having to pay their employees prices for that company’s products will also increase. For these companies to keep their employees at this increased wage they will have to be making a greater profit from their products. Third, when companies are having to pay employees at an increased wage they risk the chance of not being able to afford to pay that many employees. Therefore, there could end up being a lot of layoffs and unemployment rates will rise. Another problem with unemployment is that most teens and young adults rely on part time minimum wage jobs to have some extra cash for school and other activities. By increasing the wage for these minimum wage jobs employers are going to be looking for the best most reliable employees since they will be paying them increased wages. Teenagers and young adults may not be the most reliable employees and therefore they could go without jobs. Lastly, and the biggest problem with raising minimum wage is inflation. Inflation is defined on Dictionary.com as “a persistent, substantial rise in the general level of prices related to an increase in the volume of money and resulting in the loss of value of currency” (Dictionary.com). As mentioned above as…

The law “consists of 23 executive actions and three presidential memoranda, most of which will require congressional approval” (O’keete). This plan makes it a lot harder for people to buy and sell guns among the masses. This piece of legislation would require background checks for all gun sales, provide states with monetary incentives, bans military-style assault weapons, and many more beneficial situation to prevent gun violence in America. However, this law was never passed due to an organization misleading the nation with the help of social media. In April 2013 when Obama proposed this idea, and had the senators vote, the senators voted 54-46 which fell short of the sixty votes needed to pass the law. The president got up in front of the public and gave a speech. In that speech Obama claims that the NRA ‘“willfully lied” about the background-check proposal to stoke fear among gun rights supporters that Congress would violate their Second Amendment rights or create a federal gun registry” (Obama). If something was going to help prevent and make America safer why wouldn't everyone jump on this? Why would people just believe something an organization claims without doing there own research. The 21st century society is constant decline when compared to past generations. With a few seconds of time one is easily able to find solutions to questions online and use the information the internet…

Regardless of how much each individual earn minimum wage is still one of most recent issues in these days. However the Republicans are opposing minimum wage, but I completely disagree with them on the minimum wage proposal, due to decrease poverty line and people who work very hard deserve to have a good pay to support themselves as well as their families. Republicans are saying that it will hurt the business. It will not hurt the business since they have profits and it will not cost them that much. By raising the minimum wage it will defiantly increase the stander of living of the poor people, motivates employees to work more passionately, and decreases the cost of government social welfare programs by increasing incomes for the lowest-paid. I think raising the minimum wage will decreases the unemployment rate, because most of the people will be willing and interested to work now than before. I also disagree with republicans when the say that minimum wage will cause inflation. Nevertheless the money goes into a cycle so if worker are getting a higher salaries than the prices will increase that way businesses will benefit too because they will sell the product at higher…

Contrary to this popular myth 88% of minimum wage earners are adults 20 or older, 55% are women (Hellwig). Approximately half of those affected by minimum wage rates are families making $40,000 a year or less (Adams). In a family of four, consisting of two working parents and two children, each parent would have to work the equivalent of two full-time jobs to earn a living wage. The outlook is even more daunting for single mothers, a single mother with two children would have to work the equivalent of three and one-half full-time jobs to earn a living wage (Nadeau). Opponents of higher minimum wages caution that pay raises cannot be free, warning that consumers including those earning minimum wage will fund pay raises with higher prices. The problem with this theory is that the current system is already being funded by taxpayers, an estimated $150 billion dollars a year is spent on antipoverty programs including Medicaid, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, foods stamps, and the earned-income tax credit (Cohen). Even if society is to believe a more conservative 50% of minimum wage earners are living in poverty the right thing to do is raise minimum wage to a living wage. Doing so would take the burden off of overtaxed Americans and place it on the…

think that raising the minimum wage is going to do more bad than good to the people and the economy. First of all, raising the minimum wage will make prices go up, and that’s going to hurt everyone not just those on a minimum wage job. Also, when raising the minimum wage, employers will want to hire someone who’s really good at what they’re doing in order to afford their wage and eliminate the number of people who are working for them. Third, most minimum wage workers are in real need of the job and do not have a degree or other choice except this job, so raising the wage will make it harder for them to get the job they’re in need for. Lastly, increasing the minimum wage will make workers not do their best at the job in order to get promoted.…

Rod Sullivan, the Chair of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, has a significant amount of experience and knowledge surrounding the increase of a minimum wage – as Johnson County is in the process of increasing theirs to $10.10/hour in incremental stages. Sullivan first points out the type of people who the minimum wage would help the most – women and African American workers. Both of these groups work a majority of the low-income jobs in the country today, so they experience economic instability significantly more than other groups. Thus, an increase in the minimum wage directly helps women and African Americans. Sullivan later covered myths about the negative impacts a higher minimum wage would…
