They are barely able to pay the bills and afford groceries, and therefore should receive extra pay. This concept sounds fair and reasonable, but once this idea is put into place nationwide the future needs to be considered. If the minimum wage is increased, then those working at a lower level of pay will have a better economic situation, but this will hurt higher up workers. With a raised minimum wage, businesses will look towards alternatives for expensive workers. McDonald’s has recently started using Kiosk’s at a few of their locations and seems to be replacing workers altogether. This was disputed by a McDonald’s spokeswoman, Lisa McComb, who said that it is just another way of ordering, and not the only way. What needs to be considered is the cost of technology. Minimum wage is cheaper than automation for a period of time, but if minimum wage exceeds its devices, it will replace humans. It is also worth noting is that prices of electronics decrease over time.
