With the downfalls in the present generation still being across the nation, states and federal leaders should raise the minimum wage as a strategy in order to have an effective economic recovery agenda. In 2014, President Obama states “Raising the minimum wage nationwide will increase earnings for millions of workers, and boost the bottom lines of businesses across the country” (Obama). The minimum wage in the United States was recognized under the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, in order to soothe the economy after the Great Depression. In the beginning, it was created so that the minimum standards of living were met by this wage, so families could provide a healthy life for one another. The minimum wage must be raised because the cost of living has been rising by the day in the United States. According to the white house website, the actual value of the minimum wage has fallen by nearly one-third since 1968, and in 2014, a minimum wage worker makes 14,500 a year. This leaves too many

One important one is, will raising the minimum wage decrease poverty? “Opponents of raising the wage floor say it will help too many low-wage workers from middle-class households who are employed part time. Supporters say many of those households are struggling financially and some would be classified as poor if it weren 't for the government 's artificially low poverty thresholds” (Mantel). So the answer is yes, raising the minimum wage will affect the poor in our country, but of course there can’t be any help if they are non-working poor. It all matters on which group is the center of the point. Liberals may say, raising the minimum wage will not affect job lost. On the other side, Conservatives say that it will effect and increase job lost and it wont be beneficial to those in poverty. So it all matters on who the side is and what their opinion stands
