Lena, also known as Mama one of the characters wants to buy a house for her family with her husband’s insurance money. She buys a house in Clybourne park. When Ruth found out about it, she said, “Clybourne park? Mama, there ain’t no colored people living in Clybourne Park” (Act two. Scene 1). This shows that Black’s and White’s do not live in the same neighborhood. Walter is worried about his son’s life Travis. “I’m thirty-five years old; I been married eleven years and I got a boy who sleeps in the living room and all I got to give to him is stories about how rich White people live” (Act one. Scene 1). This show that Walter cares about Travis’s future. Walter wants Travis’s childhood memories to be good and special for him. He wants Travis to have his own room. Walter’s dream is important because if he opens a liquor store, he would not be working for a White rich man and a lot would change for the Younger family. Walter gets heartbroken when he sees his son sleeping on the couch. The play Raising in the Sun explores the theme of family through everyone in the Younger family. It is in the morning and Travis is getting ready for school. Travis wants fifty cents to bring to school.
