War causes injuries, and affects the child's immunity system due to sexually transmitted diseases. Women are at a very high risk of being exposed to violence at a time of a conflict such as war. Sexual violence such as rape, assault, prostitution and trafficking increases during a conflict because of the breakdown of traditional safety structures. Furthermore, mothers that have been harmed can potentially pass on adverse effects to their children. For example, During the Bosnian war between 1992 and 1995, the mortality and morbidity rate more than doubled and the congenital malformations went from 0.4% to 3%. In short term, sexual violence may result in the transmission of sexual diseases such as, HIV and Chlamydia. Because of this, children are already at risk of having physical effects before they are even born and even after they are born they have to face abuse. In Rwanda, children born after rape have shown a high risk of abuse and abandonment. The mother’s of the children are also neglected from the community and also have to take care of the child on their own.
