Narrative Essay On Raising A Child

Raising a child is difficult; raising six children while pursuing multiple degrees is more difficult. My mother proved, however, that it is not impossible. I grew up in New Orleans, watching my mother persevere through years of education. She would come home with degree after degree without complaint. It seemed as if she breathed them out but she also insisted that her achievements weren’t something to take lightly. Her words weren’t taken lightly but I didn’t really have to work too hard for my education. Even though I had a natural interest in school I didn’t have to work for it like other children. Assignments, projects and studying came easy to me. I never thought that I would have to have go to college to obtain the lifestyle I imagined …show more content…

The streets downtown seem to turn into campgrounds in the warm weather; colored tarps draped over fences line the sidewalks. While this is not only a sad scene, it acts as a reminder of where I came from. My home, New Orleans, is also home to a large homeless population, especially after the natural disasters of the last few decades. I consider myself lucky to have had a mother who worked so hard to provide for her children, especially in this environment, while utilizing every educational benefit she could and instilling the same drive in me. The daily scenes of homelessness in both New Orleans and San Diego have helped me to realize how I could use a degree to help others after I retire. I would like to open a shelter complex for homeless veterans as they reenter …show more content…
After I finish 20 years of active duty, I will need to transition back to civilian life, supporting my family and myself. A few college classes here and there will not sustain my lifestyle so I decided to get serious and work toward a degree. I need a foundation in business so that I can create a sustainable operation. My plan of pursuing not only my Bachelors’ Degree, but also a Masters’ Degree in business, beginning with the courses I am taking here at Excelsior College. Going from my anti-education beliefs to where I am today says a lot about how far I’ve matured. Coming to terms with the fulfillment and benefits of education has given me a new purpose of achievement. As I continue with my education I’ll remind others not to fight what is destined to happen. Obtaining a higher education was my destiny and now I am living in

Since the beginning of the vietnam war, the number of homeless veterans expanded dramatically. Thirteen percent of homeless men in the United States are veterans. It is estimated that there are over fifty-thousand homeless veterans on any given night. I attempted to remove myself from the invisible pedestal the school placed me on. I tried to spread positivity for those who didn’t think they could go to college. But, there was just so much one student could do. Nobody seemed to believe it was a wrong thing to do. Everyone was already convinced that the “high achieving classes” were indeed geniuses, and the “low achieving classes” were innately dumb.…

Across cultures and populations, child-raising is considered to be one of the most important aspects of life. The beliefs and values that parents teach in their child’s formative years often determine how children will behave and respond to situations as they grow up. Parents who are aware of the potential effects of their child-raising strategies typically attempt to influence the child’s mindset, hoping to mold them into their vision of the world. In this vein, feminists, backed by the ever-expanding movement for gender and sexual equality, have tried to change society by making their children the agents of change. What methods of child-raising do feminists employ, and how do they work to instill the feminist mindset?…

The general topic of this article is about how young children’s preliteracy knowledge and early literacy experiences affect their literacy skills at age seven. To simply put it, it explores the relationship between literacy capabilities in preliterate four year olds and their literacy related abilities at seven years old. Further, this article explores whether or not literacy is only characterized by the environment or if inherited by genes is a probable foundation of literacy. Previous research relating to this issue has shown literacy experience is affected by environmental factors such as exposure to books, songs, and nursery rhymes (Burgess, Hecht, & Lonigan, 2002; Saracho, 2002) and an understanding of phonological knowledge and letter awareness (Nathan, Stackhouse, Goulandris, & Snowling, 2004; Schneider, Roth, & Ennemoser, 2000; Treiman, Tincoff, Rodriguez, Mouzaki, & Francis, 1998). Some research supports the idea that genetics have an effect on literacy skills.…
