I 've seen so many people on the corners, holding cardboard signs that say "Homeless veteran. Anything helps." The streets downtown seem to turn into campgrounds in the warm weather; colored tarps draped over fences line the sidewalks. While this is not only a sad scene, it acts as a reminder of where I came from. My home, New Orleans, is also home to a large homeless population, especially after the natural disasters of the last few decades. I consider myself lucky to have had a mother who worked so hard to provide for her children, especially in this environment, while utilizing every educational benefit she could and instilling the same drive in me. The daily scenes of homelessness in both New Orleans and San Diego have helped me to realize how I could use a degree to help others after I retire. After I finish 20 years of active duty, I will need to transition back to civilian life, supporting my family and myself. A few college classes here and there will not sustain my lifestyle so I decided to get serious and work toward a degree. I need a foundation in business so that I can create a sustainable operation. My plan of pursuing not only my Bachelors’ Degree, but also a Masters’ Degree in business, beginning with the courses I am taking here at Excelsior College. Going from my anti-education beliefs to where I am today says a lot about how far I’ve matured. Coming to terms with the fulfillment and benefits of education has given me a new purpose of achievement. As I continue with my education I’ll remind others not to fight what is destined to happen.
