In the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry the setting is in Chicago around WW2 and the 1950s. Within the play there is many conflicts between the characters. The family receives a check of 10,000 dollars and they each have a different idea of what to do with the money. The younger family buys a house in an all-white neighborhood in a time of discrimination and racism. Two characters that influence the plot of the play the most are Walter and Mama.

Walter is the son of Mama, and he is married to Ruth. Walter is ashamed of his culture because of where they stand in the society they live in. Walter also feels as if he is going to do big things in life but he has many preventions from doing so as well as him feeling as if nobody understands him in the family. “I been out talking with people who understand me. People who care about the things I got on my mind” this quote shows that walker goes out of the house to talk to friends and people who understands him because his family does not. Throughout the play Walter becomes miserable and furious. He goes out drinking and getting drunk which negatively effects himself, as well as the people around him. When Walter is dunk or unhappy he is not himself, and he is very rude to the people around him. “(violently flinging the coat after her) And you turn mine too, baby! (The door slams behind her) That was my biggest mistake-“Walter is saying how Ruth makes him sick and how marrying her was his biggest mistake. What Walter had said to Ruth was a very rude thing to say to your own wife and it goes to show how rude Walter can be when he is unhappy. Walter wanted Mama to give him the insurance money so he could use it to invest in a liquor store and in the long run help out the family. In the family’s struggles and waiting for the check to come, Walter and Mama most influence how things go in the play and what decisions are made. It is a rough time for the family who is living in poverty in a time or racism and discrimination.
