A main reason why segregation took place is because of false stereotypes that were given. Walter did not follow these stereotypes. He was the complete opposite. African Americans were portrayed as people that worked for white men for their whole life. Walter, the type of guy that wanted to advance in his career. He wanted to be more a chauffeur, he wanted his own business. “ PUT IN THE QUOTE” Another stereotype is put on African Americans are that they are aggressive and evil. This stereotype is even supported in this play. When Mama bought a house in a white neighborhood, a man that was part of the neighborhood tries to negotiate with Walter to buy the house. Clearly his family were feared, all because of their race. Walter was energetic and wanted the best for his family. “PUT IN THE QUOTE” Clearly, he cares about about his family, he is not the type of man that is needed to be feared.
