“Clever one, that Rainsford fellow.” General Zaroff remarked, peering at the blustering waters. He lit one of his cigarettes. “What a shame, though. Death by drowning.”
Confirming that the blurry figures disappeared from the cliff, Rainsford bursted above the sea, gasping for air. The navy blue sky was now dotted with glittering stars, but there was still a smudge of orange and red towards the west. The dark silhouette of the château loomed in the distance, and Rainsford swam towards it. As he got to the shore, he was exhausted and chilled to the bone; the bitter air of the night only making matters worse.

A loud thud interrupted General Zaroff’s words. The two men stared blankly at each other.
“Now, who in God’s name is here at this hour?” The general muttered, swinging open his bedroom door.

“I apologize for interrupting anything, sir, but I recently lost..” The meek voice was muffled by Rainsford’s thunderous footsteps.
