In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the protagonist is Rainsford. He is a big game hunter. In the beginning of the story Whitney says to Rainsford that maybe animals can feel something besides just fear then Rainsford says to Whitney “Don’t talk rot, Whitney, You’re a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how the jaguar feels?”(6). This shows that Rainsford is an arrogant human being, but can core beliefs change when somebody’s life is threatened? Rainsford accidentally falls overboard from his yacht and ends up swimming to a dangerous island where he meets the owner of the island who is a Cossack and avid hunter.
