In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s fluctuation of the weather symbolically represents the changing of characters’ moods throughout chapter five. After the rain, the emerging sun represents Gatsby’s calm, collected, and overall positive change in attitude. When the rain is falling outside, Gatsby is a nervous wreck, “acting like a little boy,”(93) at the sight of Daisy. Knocking over furniture, fidgeting, and losing his composure makes Gatsby seem vulnerable in Daisy’s presence. After collecting himself and reestablishing his suave aura, the rain let up and Gatsby becomes comfortable with Daisy. Even Gatsby's home is described as more beautiful than before in the sunlight.
