He spread his wings out, and stretched his tail across the surface, managing to stay on top of the vegetation, then waited anxiously for the storm to reach him, hoping that this fragile structure wouldn’t be torn apart by the wind and waves.
Wind speed was picking up now, and rain began to fall in sheets. Lightning flashed across the sky, but so far no bolts were coming down to the sea near him. Raidat was too far from any other dragon to send a message mind to mind, but he had brought a memory pearl with him, just in case he was lost at sea. He began to compose a message to his brethren.
“On this, my third journey eastward from the island called Negrina, I have been forced to land on a floating pad of vegetation, in an attempt to escape a storm. Outlook is poor, but not hopeless. No land sighted and I may die in vain trying to find what I seek.”
Raidat held the pearl close, then decided to keep it with him for a while longer, returning it to the inner pouch hidden under the scales of his chest. A memory pearl is virtually indestructible, and will float on the seas, but he wasn’t desperate enough to launch it. There might be more information valuable to his kin yet to be discovered, and he could add more observations
