In the beginning, I made use of the rhetorical question by asking the audience whether they have personally met or confronted a victim of physical/sexual abuse or teen pregnancy. For the most part, the answer to the question went as planned.…

The critical piece of literature, “A Black Feminist Statement” by the Combahee River Collective, provides its readers with the backbone of what Black feminism is. The Combahee River Collective is a collection of Black feminists that established itself in 1974. Their fundamental cause is fighting “against racial, sexual, heterosexual, and class oppression” (A Black Feminist Statement 210). The Combahee River Collective, in other words, sees Black feminism as “the logical political movement to combat the manifold and simultaneous oppression that all women of color face” (A Black Feminist Statement 210). In McCarriston’s poem “To Judge Faolain, Dead Long Enough: A Summons,” the narrator— who by the emotion in the poem appears to be the daughter of the abused woman—now orders and recalling the original scene in the judge’s courtroom. This is indicative of the fact that the narrator is speaking to the judge in the past tense about her mother, as she began the poem with “Your Honor, when my mother stood / before you…” (1, 2). The narrator’s emotion regarding her mother’s injuries is also within the descriptions of her abuse, particularly the mentioning of her face being “pancake” and “her heart / the bursting heart of someone snagged” (7, 10-11).…

Humans dedicate their whole lives in ensuring their survival by getting jobs to provide basic needs and making friends and companions to not have to rough through the struggles of life alone. This form of survival deals with those who are blessed with freedom; the freedom to work, speak out, love, laugh and most importantly live.
