The chapter “Cogs in the machine” from the book Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser recounts the industrialization of the meat industry and the monopolies that spurred from that moment in time. Schlosser (argues?) that the industrialization and monopolization of the beef industry has affected the towns/cities that produce it, and how the beef is produced in and of itself. Schlosser supports his point through his recounting of how our current meat industry came into fruition. Before unionization, meat production was centralized in the Chicago area. However, workers for these factories unionized to increase their wages and working conditions. The unionization of workers pushed meat production to the rural west, where unionization was more unlikely
