Much in the same way that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, madness and its ever-changing definition––due both to perspective and to one’s own personal beliefs––is determined by each individual on a case-by-case basis. Society caters to this fluidity by manipulating conceptions of what is acceptable and correct. In many cases, madness is simply the over-stigmatization of opposing ideas from those already set by societal norms and traditions. Depending on your environment, different practices are viewed as irrational, illegal in some extremes. In the Bacchae, Euripides exploits the duality of madness and its ability to destroy societal constraints, namely through his presentation of ambiguous gender roles and gender identity.…

Today the character of Rhiannon from the First Branch of the Mabinogi is considered to be a strong female lead in the Celtic Literature. However, her role within the story is not so clear-cut and much of her power and influence within the text is determined by her ethereal nature. If one were to describe the qualities of a hero, what would they say? Quick-wittedness, generosity, and kindness would be common answers, but few people, if any, would answer perplexedness, selfishness, and maliciousness. Odysseus, undoubtedly a great hero, portrays flaws when surrounded death while on his journey home. Death in The Odyssey often overshadows Odysseus’s heroic glory and brings about key flaws in his characterization such as perplexedness after the crewmen kill the cattle of Helios, selfishness after Elpenor’s death, and maliciousness when he murders the suitors. Odysseus is perplexed as to what to do after he has discovered his men have killed the cattle of Helios; Odysseus is unsure of the actions he should take because animals,…

In Act 1, Betty Parris also reveals that Abigail had tried to harm Elizabeth using witchcraft (“You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!”), following which Abigail became violent and told her never to disclose that fact. Hence, we can see that getting revenge on Elizabeth Proctor was a matter of great personal importance to Abigail. She does so by accusing Elizabeth of witchcraft and Danforth believes her and Elizabeth is arrested. When Elizabeth was tried later, much of the evidence against her was Abigail's word against hers, and although she was never convicted or sentenced like the other victims, the mere fact that she, a respected farmer’s wife, could be convicted shows that the law then was being manipulated by Abigail for motives like vengeance. John…

Nothing is better than to read a story of great battles between two opposing forces, especially if there are from ancient Greece. Great Aeneas was such a selfless and geat warrior compared to Hector of the Trojans who fought to be a loyal defender of his city.
