Raegan had to emanate a sense of emotional intelligence and confidence. At the start of his speech he took on a melancholy tone. Raegan grabs the audience attention and captures their emotions by empathizing with his fellow Americans from a “person to person” perspective. Presenting a sorrowful mood onto the audience. Instead of staying in his Presidential position Raegan steps away from that describing the tragedy as a “day for mourning and remembering”, so that he can clearly express his pain and true emotions towards the situation. He uses words like “brave and faith” to give provide listeners with some comfort. While he has created this heartfelt tone, he makes a shift to become more uplifting. He states that “There will be more shuttle flights and more shuttle crews and, yes, more volunteers, more civilians, more teachers in space. Nothing ends here; our hopes and our journeys continue”. Showing the people that despite the tragedy, it gives them a chance to improve and make innovations. “We’ve never had a tragedy like this… we mourn their loss as a nation together”. President Raegan had to announce the death of the astronauts that risked their own life for the mission and didn’t get a chance to make it. At the beginning of his speech he said, “Nancy and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger.” By not only addressing himself, but also his wife, the speech is brought upon a more personal basis. This shows a form of empathy and paints a picture for the character of his wife as well, making her seem sweet and caring. In order to show that his sympathy is just as heartfelt as the families of the seven he says, “For the families of the seven, we cannot bear, as you do the full impact of this tragedy.” He continues with his speech to talk about how they died a courageous and brave death doing something they had a passion for. As he goes on he addresses the school children that were watching this happen live. Anyone that has tried explaining a difficult situation to children, knows that it’s not an easy thing to do.
