The Technology of Radiology
There is a lot of technology included in Radiology. Radiologists are medical doctors that diagnose and treat diseases “using medical imaging technologies.” They use many different tools and machines to diagnose and treat people. Some of the technology used in radiology are catheters, wires, small instruments and tools, scanners, and remote viewing systems. The three most common scans are CT, MRI, and PET.
There are many different types of x-rays, the most well known one is the CT scan also known as CAT scan. CT stands for "Computerized Tomography." They may put straps and bolsters on you so you stay secure and are in the right position. Also they will put an IV (intravenous catheter) in you to contrast material. When you get placed in the machine to get the MRI the radiologist and technologist will work on a computer outside of the room. They may take additional images while the IV is in or after they take it out. When you are done you will be asked to wait and they will take the IV out. It usually takes 30-50 minutes to complete the exam.
Another type of MRI is the Functional MRI or fMRI. fMRI measures the change of blood flow to different parts of your brain. When you look at an image of a fMRI the yellow parts show increased activity in your brain. Functional MRI is a “functional neuroimaging procedure.” Neuro relates to the nervous system or nerves. It depends on what organ they are testing. The tracer collects where there are higher levels of chemical activity, which often show where the disease is if there is one. The screen shows the disease as lighter spots. PET is useful for showing or evaluating these diseases such as heart disease, some cancers, and brain disorder. PET scans can take a long time, sometimes several hours. It can also affect your test if you haven’t eaten or are diabetic. Your blood levels or insulin levels are altered then when you take the test. The image is made when the x-ray goes through your body and scans it. Then the radiotracer is injected into your bloodstream, swallowed or inhaled as a gas. This radioactive material accumulates in the area of your body that is being examined.
