What is an archaeological dig?
It is an area which is slowly, carefully and methodically excavated under careful eye of one or more archaeologists. Their goal is to find historical evidence of former humans, societies and/or civilizations. Most areas of the Earth are covered over by soil which is accumulated over the years, so that it is necessary to dig deep down to find really old artifacts.
Who discovered/invented it?
Even back in what we would think was ancient, there was the start of the methodical investigation into the past by Herodotus. He was the first western scholar to methodically collect artifacts and test their age.
When was it invented
Herodotus invented it when he was 47 so it would be in 472 BCE.
