Radio Music Evaluation

When it comes to radio stations, you literally have the world to choose from. Talk radio, religious programs, foreign programs, and of course every genre of music you could ever want to listen to, depending on where you are. With all of these options it is no wonder why manufacturers put that little “scan” button on radios. Have you ever paid attention to how your favorite station is programed out for certain times? It is definitely crazy how much time and effort goes into making a program hour perfect. I listened and observed KROQ for an hour starting at 9pm and this is what I experienced. KROQ had a total 23 commercials, two weekend previews, and two previews for the next program. The total amount of time was 20 minutes breaking the commercials …show more content…
Both sets were played pretty much completely through without interruptions except for a few intros and recaps here and there. New and old songs were split down the middle with 6 being within two years and 6 being released longer than two years ago. All the songs were pretty upbeat and all falling into the rock category with a few being rock/pop. I feel like this is unfair for the station though, because the whole hour seemed like a filler hour for the next program. To have an accurate opinion on the station as a whole, I would definitely need to listen in for more than just one hour. If I could change one thing, I would give Nicole more mic time. Let her talk about what is going on in her world. I guess when it comes to listening to radio, I like it when the DJ gets personal and asks questions about what’s going on in their life and who can relate. I feel like this station is targeting my demographic of early twenties to mid thirties, but this particular hour did not hold my

On the surface, one might not think that the great Italian opera La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi and the acclaimed indie group Dinosaur Jr. have much in common. One concert, for instance, took place in an intimate performing arts center to an attentive and quietly reverent audience while the other in a loud, rough-and-tumble rock venue to a lively and informal audience. Indeed, there may appear to be no similarities between the effortlessly skilled classical stylings of the UNT College of Music and the deliberately ramshackle indie sound of Dinosaur Jr. However, with these two concerts, we see Christopher Small’s concept of “musicking” in full effect and, critically, two different forms of the same musical elitism.…

Over the course of thousands of years, human behavior remained consistent. There are striking parallels between the past and the present that are beautifully preserved in the words of poems, songs, and other writings. Even though the terminology and language may be different, the message remains true. An example of such a pairing is the 2nd century poem from Basavanna, “Before the grey reaches the cheek” and the 20th century song by Billy Joel, “Piano Man.” At first, the poem and the song seem like they don’t correspond with each other, but at a closer glimpse, the similarities are astonishing.…

At the concert, I was a perspective listener. The perspective listener is a combination of all of the listener types. Traditional radio has become more conservative and is playing less variety than ever. Radio stations have grown more repetitive because of the top songs of the time being repeated constantly throughout the day. Radio is creating a name for itself and disabling listeners because of how low the variety is – the more popular the song, the more it play it receives. The top songs are hogging all the air time and blocking new artists and new songs by established artists. This is where Spotify and Pandora comes in.…
