As a result, I was a part of the onboard radiation protection program and received frequent training on the hazards associated with radiation. Not only did my time in the nuclear community peak my interest in the Radiation Health field, but the rigorous nuclear training pipeline also prepared me for the challenging physics and calculus coursework I would be exposed to in my undergraduate studies. During my employment at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Boston I was able to work with a graduate of MCPHS, Kaiming (Kyle) Chiang, MPAS, PA-C. His knowledge and comprehension of his role as well as his eagerness to always do more inspired me. Kyle’s professionalism and confidence led him to be a favorite among several patients; he was able to diagnose with confidence; and was able to communicate with the patients in a way that they would be able to understand. Kyle was always an advocate for MCPHS and as I continued to work with him I was able to see, not only his passion, but the knowledge he gleaned from his time at MCPHS. I knew that MCPHS was not only a school that prepared their students well for the workplace, but also teaches them in a manner where patient education and…

The National Institutes of Health has a printed consensus statement that clearly notes that the ideal treatment for these problems is total removal of the tumor. But there are other options including incomplete removal or stereotactic radiation therapy. Depending on the type of surgery done if the whole tumor is completely removed then the likelihood of it growing back decreases, but there can still be some down fall based on the type of surgery done. Some down falls include complete loss of hearing on the side the tumor is located, if the removal affects the vestibulocochlear nerve and if the facial nerve is damaged, than facial paralysis can happen and complete loss of facial mobility on the affected side. It is not an easy decision to get into medical school. Thinking about the years I will spend digging between the books and running from one side of the building to another definitely gave me goose bumps. However, that feeling was not anywhere near a bad one, on the contrary, it was that kind of excitement that nothing else can give to you. Radiation is most useful when the tumor is located in an area where the removal of the tumor would interfere too much with the healthy functioning of the other organs. As a result of radiation therapy, some healthy cells will inevitably be damaged, but cells that divide quickly, such as cancer cells, are the most vulnerable (“Radiation therapy,” 2000). Within the broad category of radiation therapy, there are three main types: external-beam radiation therapy, internal radiation therapy (also known as brachytherapy) and systemic radiation therapy. External radiation is most often delivered in photon beams delivered in a rapidly moving beam by a linear accelerator machine (“Radiation Therapy for Cancer,” 2010).…
