It is once again his ignorance to the medical aspect that doesn’t allow him to understand what constitutes a public health issues. An issue such as obesity just doesn’t affect one person. It taxes the 911 system who must respond and transport the patients to the hospital who have obesity induced medical problems. It then in turn affects the Emergency Rooms who must see and treat these patients. This tax the hospital systems, which increases wait times and increases cost. Since hospital cost are rising so will insurance cost. When a medical issue has such an impact on a populations health and become financially burdening, it is deemed a public health issues as it affects all in a population. With obesity being considered a public health issues comes with the funding to help eliminate the issues which can be used to fund health initiative. Balko would most likely argue that the money could be used for more important things. If one life could be saved due to the funding, then it is money well spent. There is no value that can be placed on human
