The gist of this article was to inform people on Hurston’s thoughts about race, and African American literature. Zora believed that a new race was on the rise along with new philosophies, and this race will not be judged by the color of their skin but be judged by their achievements and its own merit. Zora Neal Hurston had a voice, a strong voice at that, and the author/s of this article knew this as well, and the point she was trying to make is that she or no one else should not have to be given an equal chance to make it. And just because she did not grow up privileged like some whites that it was still possible for her to become someone important, and with this being said she did not want anyone to characterize her as one of the best “African American” writers but just one of the best writers, this was a message she and the author of this article wanted to get across to white people. I also think this article was intended for a writer audience because it was mentioned how writers needed to tell the truth more in their literature and how Hurston believed that literature had not reached to its proper
