Racism Vs Sexism

Decent Essays
“The term speciesism that Peter Singer invented stands for, discrimination in favor of one species, usually the human species, over another, especially in the exploitation or mistreatment of animals by humans” (Dictonary.com, 2017). We recognize racism to be in favor of one’s own race against another while sexism is in favor of one’s own sex against another. Speciesism is analogous to racism and/or sexism because all three follow the bias of being in favor of one’s own being over another. Overall, animals and humans share the same purpose in life, to exist and live. When using animals as subjects for testing purposes, we are not valuing their dignity to live. The difference among humans and species is that species are incapable of moral decisions.

People of color are unable to be racist, and it’s the truth. Racism, in short, is the belief that one race is superior in relations to other races distinguished as oppressed. “Reverse racism” does not exist, however, prejudice against whites does. Of the balance in the social hierarchy, citizens are enabled to begin a life with the freedom given to them from the United States to live as they please for no race but one.…

As stated by Professor Charles R Magel,“Ask the experimenters why they test on animals and the answer is: ‘Because animals are like us’. Ask the experimenters why it is morally okay to experiment on animals and the answer is ‘Because the animals are not like us’. Animal experimentation rests on a logical contradiction” (Source #4). Scientists believe that animals are more similar to us in body anatomy and biology than personality. However, they’re more like us human in a sense of consciousness rather than body.…

    1. The reading notes that there was a definite tendency toward “Negrophilia” in parts of northern and western Europe in the late Middle Ages, and the common presumption that dark pigmentation inspired instant revulsion of the part of light skinned Europeans is, if not completely false, at least highly misleading (Fredrickson 26). The cult of Prester John and Ethiopia was one of several signs that blacks could be represented in a positive and dignified manner in the late Middle Ages. The reading also explains how it was “wrong” to enslave other Christians, so they went for Africans and had the idea that their souls might be saved through contact with believers. I thought the most interesting thing from this article was how in the past they were tempted to see blackness as a curse signifying that Africans were designated by God himself to be a race of slaves.…

Is There Beauty in Using the Beast: an analysis of animal experimentation In David Benatar's "Duty and the Beast: animal experimentation and neglected interests," he poses the question: is experimenting on animals worth the price of death and suffering? Benatar recognizes that many medical experts are aware of their actions and feel that the costs to animals are outweighed by the benefits to humans; yet states that further information is needed to decide if experimentation on animals can be proven morally just. He invites his audience to delve into the moral question: do even the most minute benefits of animal experimentation to human kind outweigh the great costs to animals? Benatar expresses that in calculating and comparing the costs and the benefits many individuals…

Eugenics: the means to justify racism and sexism in the early 20th century During the early 20th century there were a lot of changes that were happening in America. It was a transition period for people adapting with the Emancipation Proclamation and new lifestyles. A side effect of these changes was Eugenics, which was a byproduct of people coping with racist and sexist mentalities. They viewed minorities especially African Americans as less than desirable traits and treated them as such.…

It is sad that after two decades hate and racism and bigotry has not lessoned. I agree with your statement that these actions and beliefs are passed down from older generations to the new. I think that some of this comes also from the fear of the unknown and things that are different. If children are educated and learn from the beginning that being different is ok and to value those differences I believe it will cut down on the volume of hate. I don't believe that hate will every go away…

Today’s racial climate is just as turbulent as it was decades ago; however, the key difference is that legal racism has changed to psychological discouragement and structural violence cause by a system based on economic standing. There have been calls for a new civil rights movement to further racial justice. I want to first take a trip back in time and slowly work our way to the present; tracing our way through how colored dolls reshape a gloomy racial canvas. The topic of conversation revolves around how simple experiments proved that self-perception and self-confidence varies based on race. This idea helps demonstrate the purpose of the paper, which is to track how racism and different identities impact the psychology of specific individuals.…

Animal’s Capabilities In Bonnie Steinbock’s “Speciesism and the Idea of Equality” she provides arguments against those of Peter Singers in his article “All Animals are Equal.” Steinbock argues that non-human animals should have specifics rights. She didn’t go as far as saying that they should have the right to vote or marry, but the right to be recognized as coherent beings just as capable of suffering and feeling as we are. The way that I see it, Steinbock provides some valid points but fails to acknowledge the quantity of animals in our world, and that there are some animals that we don’t care if they suffer.…

I am an eighteen year old interracial female, I have experienced both sexism and racism in my life. Due to my complexion being lighter I have not encountered racism or sexism as harshly as those who have a darker complexion. Colorism in the African American, Asian, Latino, and Hispanic communities is an issue that is downplayed. Colorism comes from internalized and systematic racist beliefs that lighter is better in regards to skin color. We as a society have been conditioned to believe European features are more superior to those of different origins.…

Though I concede that in some situations, animal testing may be useful, such as in immensely important medical studies, I still maintain that it is unnecessary to make an animal suffer and be discriminated against. Although some people may think that animal testing is healthy and beneficial to humans, I believe that animal testing is unethical and utterly wrong because of the unfair repulsive treatment that animals receive from scientists. This topic is important because the world we live in is as much an animal 's world as it is a human’s world and right now humans are discriminating and enslaving…
