Racism is an issue that should be addressed not only because it offends certain people, but because it is a hindrance to one’s potential and capabilities. This country was founded on the ideals that all men are created equal and have certain unalienable rights including the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Racism denies African Americans these unalienable rights. By design it is in disaccord with our country’s founding values, and it is the duty of every American to uphold these values. The country prides itself on being the land of the free, with unmatched opportunities, and promises of the American Dream for those who work for it. In regards to this, the country is a foundation of hypocrisy and lies. If citizens of the United States cannot see to it that the principles of the country are established, they are undeserving of being called …show more content…

Our society is like a statue, they both need the proper structure needed in order to keep it steady, but when one piece does not fit, then they will both topple down. Although statues may not relate to the problem, racism can relate to the one piece that does not fit, and this problem is explained in the articles " Black Men In Public Spaces", by Brent Staples, and " Is Everyone A Little Bit Racist" , by Nicolas Kristof. These articles dive into the topic of how racism affects everyday lives and how detrimental it is to the society and the people within. Also, it shows the unfortunate story of a victim of racism. Unless changes are made, racism will rule supreme in communities and there will be nothing for people to stop it.…

“Is Racism a Permanent Feature of American Society?” takes the reader into a deep debate between two scholars.
