Racism according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is “a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race”. The Black Lives Matter statement, is believed to be a racist movement started by African Americans to gain support over how unjust they have been treated. On one hand, it is acceptable to have a movement, however, labeling it by a race makes people question its validity. Whites, Asians, Chinese, and all other races look at this movement and think that the world should only care about the unjust that African Americans are dealing with. In reality, it isn’t just the black community that is subject to racism, torture, and ridicule. “According to the most recent census data, there are nearly 160 million more white people in America than there are black people. White people make up roughly 62 percent of the U.S. population but only about 49 percent of those who are killed by police officers. African Americans, however, account for 24 percent of those fatally shot and killed by the police despite being just 13 percent of the U.S. population. As The Post noted in a new analysis published last week, that means black Americans are 2.5 times as likely as white Americans to be shot and killed by police officers” (The Washington Post). For example, Dante Parker died in a hospital after being stunned multiple times. During an altercation with a female deputy, Parker was shot with a stun gun and shocked what is said to be twenty-five to twenty-eight times. Is this a use of excessive force? The female officer was responding to a call that a man was attempting to break into a residential area. After the suspect, Parker, was identified, the officer chased him. On this chase, they ended up a mile or so from Parker’s household and this is where the altercation took place. Witnesses say that Parker was not resisting and being cooperative when the officer shot him with the stun gun and supplied the shocks over and over again. It is stated in The Sun Newspaper that, “When more deputies arrived, they struggled for several more minutes before handcuffing him [Parker] and putting him in a quad car. A sheriff’s statement said Parker began sweating and had difficulty breathing. He died while being treated at Victor Valley Global, according to the document”. It was later noted by Parker’s attorney that based off of the evidence, Dante Parker was not combative and that the story and the evidence do not line
